MORTAIR®
Mortar Air-Entraining Agent
Product Description
MORTAIR® is a liquid air-entraining agent for use in the production of air entrained mortar. It is normally used in conjunction with MORTARD® 79/5 Mortar Retarder (see separate data sheet).
MORTAIR® is specifically formulated to allow ease of production of ready-to-use mortars with air contents meets with the limits stated in BS 4721.
MORTAIR® yields a constant air content over a wide range of dosages. MORTAIR® gives an extremely stable air system and meets the requirements of BS 4887: Part 1.
Advantages
- MORTAIR® produces a stable air system with minimum air loss throughout the life of the plastic mortar.
- Production of ready-to-use mortars complying with BS 4721 is made easier because of the plateauing of air content and constant air content over a wide range of dosage.
- Due to its dosage tolerance, the levels of entrained air when using MORTAIR® are less susceptible to variation in sand grading and silt content of the sand.
- Mortar containing MORTAIR® has very good site acceptance because of its constant air content, reduced bleeding and predictable workability and life.

Compatibility with Cements
MORTAIR® can be used with all types of Portland Cement. For use with special cements we recommend that you consult GCP Applied Technologies.
Compatibility with other Admixtures
MORTAIR® should not be premixed under any circumstances with other admixtures. While some admixtures can be usefully combined within the same mix the performance of this product may well be affected by the presence of other chemicals and we recommend that GCP be contacted for advice in all such circumstances.
Addition Rates
Range: 200 ml–400 ml per 100 kg cement
The addition rate of MORTAIR® is dependent on the characteristics of the mortar constituents and air entrainment required. Several factors which affect air entrainment are:
- Type and efficiency of mixing equipment
- Water content
- Fine aggregate content and type
- Cement/lime content and type
- Temperature
MORTAIR® is supplied ready for use. It should be added to mortar mixes during the mixing process, at the same time as the water or the aggregates and not directly onto cement.
With good plant control, very consistent results can be obtained.
It is essential that preliminary plant tests are performed, so that the above criteria can be assessed, before dosage levels are finalised.
For advice and assistance with your trials we would recommend that you consult GCP.
Overdosing of MORTAIR® will result in a modest increase in air content and workability.
Dispensing
It is preferable that liquid admixtures for mortar should be introduced into the mixer by means of automatic dispensing equipment. Such equipment is available, and details will be supplied by GCP on request.
Health and Safety
For further information see MORTAIR® SDS (Safety Data Sheet) or consult GCP.
Packaging
MORTAIR® is supplied in 210 litre, non-returnable containers.
Storage
MORTAIR® should be stored in original containers or suitable closed tanks, preferably out of direct sunlight and protected from extremes of temperature.
Storage Life in Manufacturer’s Drums:
